Black Student Achievement Plan

What is BSAP?

At Brentwood Science Magnet we want to be sure that everyone in our diverse community has a sense of belonging and acceptance. The Black Student Achievement Plan was implemented by LAUSD during the 2020-21 school year.
The Black Student Achievement Plan was established in 2020 in direct response to address the longstanding disparities in educational outcomes between Black students and their non-Black peers.  The BSAP addresses the need for culturally responsive curriculum and instruction as the classroom norm, fosters partnerships with community-based organizations with proven track records of success within the Black community, and provides increased staffing support to address the academic and social-emotional needs of Black students.

At our school we have an innovative team designated to ensure that our African American/Black families and students are supported academically and emotionally. Their roles are:

The BSAP School Climate Advocate (SCA) supports students throughout the school day and sees to culturally relevant activities for both our black student population and allies.

The BSAP Psychiatric Social Worker (PSW) supports students who need extra support in navigating their feelings and understanding the challenges they may face on and off campus. The PSW is a key role in helping students with appropriate peer-to-peer interactions, regulating "big" feelings, coping with circumstances that may interrupt the day-to-day.

The BSAP Community Representative provides support parents/caregivers acting as a liaison between school and home should any hindrance make communication between teachers/staff at the school a challenge.  The community representative also works to establish a strong community with our Black identifying families so we feel seen, heard, and valued in what our experiences contribute to the school environment.

Other positions that support BSAP are the Restorative Justice Teacher who serves to support members of the school community resolve conflicts and maintain a peaceful and productive learning environment and; the Pupil Services and Attendance Counselor (PSA) which serves to provide intervention and support to student population experiencing attendance challenges, engagement, and achievement.
